TMJ Treatment
For almost 25 years, Dr. Fred Simonton has provided TMJ treatment for patients suffering pain or discomfort related to TMJ disorder. The first step in treatment, however, is understanding the root problem. TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint and is where the lower jaw (mandible) joins the temporal bone of the skull in front of the ear on each side of the head. A small disc of cartilage separates the bones so the mandible slides easily. The TMJ moves every time one chews, talks, and swallows and is one of the most frequently used joints in all of the body.
When a patient experiences pain over the joint in front of the ear, possibly radiating elsewhere, it is often caused by TMJ syndrome (or TMJ Disorder). Although there are many options for TMJ treatment, our practice’s approach for treatment to this disorder is based upon your individual diagnosis. However, surgery is often the best course of action.
Typically, by the time TMJ surgery is discussed, patients have been referred to our office by a dentist or primary care physician after other therapy options (heat, soft diet, medications, therapeutic appliances) have been exhausted. For more information on TMJ treatment, please visit the other areas of our site, or contact our office.
